The St. Louis Cardinals have signed Carlos Villanueva to a Minor League contract.
Villanueva will earn $2 million if he reaches the Major Leagues.
The Texas Rangers have extended Adrian Beltre's contract through the 2016 season.
The extension is actually an amendment of the original contract Beltre signed on Jan. 5, 2011.
In that deal, the first five years and $80 million were guaranteed with an option in 2016 that could have paid Beltre $16 million if he hit specific incentives in plate appearances last year and/or in 2015.
Under the amendment announced Monday, Beltre is guaranteed $16 million this year and $18 million in 2016, according to a report.
Texas could have voided the final year if Beltre failed to reach the incentives.
As Nationals pitchers and catchers went through their first official workout of spring training, the team announced Saturday that it had exercised the 2016 option on manager Matt Williams' contract.

Alvarez was awarded a $5.75 million salary by Robert Herzog, James Oldham and Dan Brent, who heard arguments on Wednesday. Pittsburgh had argued for $5.25 million.
The second overall pick in 2008, Alvarez made $4.25 million last year.

The Kansas City Royals have avoided arbitration with Eric Hosmer by agreeing to a two-year, $13.9 million deal.
Hosmer gets $5.65 million this season and $8.25 million next season. He will be eligible for arbitration again in 2017. He is not eligible for free agency until 2018.
He was asking for $6.7 million in arbitration, while the Royals were offering $4.6 million.
